Awareness

October is breast cancer awareness month, this is the time to increase awareness of this disease. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer among women. One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer, that ratio alone should be an eye opener. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early. When caught early it is easier to treat and chances of survival are increased. Some people have no symptoms at all but some symptoms can include:

  • A new lump in the breast or armpit
  • Dimpling of the breast skin
  • Pulling in of the nipple
  • Pain in any area of the breast
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk

Other conditions can also cause these symptoms and is not necessarily caused by cancer. If you have any symptoms please be sure to check with your doctor right away to either rule out breast cancer or to begin treatment immediately. Remember the earlier the better! For me it was it was a pulling in of the nipple. It worried me so I immediately scheduled an appointment to see my doctor. It was definitely the worst news I’d ever received, but I was fortunate to have caught it at stage 2. It was not an easy battle but it was won with faith, hope, and strength. My journey has encouraged me to spread awareness to any and everyone who will listen. Don’t take chances with your health even if there is no pain or symptoms get that mammogram regularly to get and stay ahead of it!
